Course Objectives
Swimming is a lifetime sport that will help you have greater fitness now and throughout your life. It can bring many hours of enjoyable and safe exercise if you learn to do it well. The purpose of this class is to enable you to have a period during the day to workout, so that you can be competitive with other high school swimmers. It is an opportunity to have this class and it will not be used as a chance to come late to school, or to finish uncompleted homework.
This period will be used to:
1. Strive for personal improvement in swimming.
2. Prepare to qualify and obtain your best times in the region and state swim meets.
3. Learn the value and the rewards of commitment, dedication, goal setting, discipline, and team work.
4. To perfect your swimming strokes, turns and starts.
5. To have fun.
6. Win Meets
COURSE OUTLINE
First term: Stroke technique, starts, turns, weight training, flexibility, endurance training, nutrition, and sport's psychology
Second term: stroke techniques, weight training, endurance & sprint work, meet preparation.
SWIM ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible to participate on the swim team the following requirements must be met:
1. You must have no less than a 2.0 grade average. Not more than one failing grade.
2. A 2.0 citizenship average and not more than one "0" in citizenship.
3. You must have a physical exam by a qualified doctor. (due by October 6th )
4. Pay the $50 participation fee. (Due by October 6th )
5. Sign the Tryout Checklist form stating that you understand the eligibility rules of the UHSAA.
6. Sign the Drug Testing Release Form (Due by October 6th )
7. Follow the team rules, as outlined in the Swim Team Book.
SUITS AND EQUIPMENT
---We will decide on and buy the team suits together. The men's suits are usually around $30-40, and the women's suits are usually about $50-$60.
---You will need to have a good pair of swim goggles.
---If you do not have insurance through your parents, school insurance is available. Check with the office for the forms and the costs.
LOCKERS
You may choose a locker, then report the locker number to Coach Goffe. Because of the number of classes and swimmers needing lockers, you will not be able to have more than one locker. You will have to supply your own lock. Locks will be cut off of lockers that do not have their numbers as being recorded with the swim team or swim classes. DO NOT LEAVE VALUABLES IN YOUR LOCKERS.
GRADES
Your grade for this class is based on a point system, based mainly on your attendance and participation. There are 10 points possible each day. Those points are broken down as follows:
Attendance ‑ 3 points
Participation ‑ 5 points
Team Spirit ‑ (on time, lane lines, kickboards etc.) 2 points
10 points total per day
There are 22 days of school the first quarter, at 10 points per day, there are 220 points possible for attendance and participation. In addition to these points, you will get credit for keeping your team manual up to date and completing assignments in it. Assignments include: a goal sheet worth 60 points, a record of one week's eating pattern worth 70 points, and a motivational thought worth 50 points, for a total of 400 points.
Grades will be earned according to the following scale:
400 ‑ 360 points = A
359 ‑ 320 points = B
319 ‑ 240 points = C
239 ‑ 200 points = D
199 points and under= F
CITIZENSHIP GRADE
The school and district citizenship and attendance policies will be followed as outlined in the TI Book. Students may earn a:
4 for honors 3 for good 2 for satisfactory 1 for poor 0 for failure
Three areas are considered when awarding a citizenship grade: tardies, student behavior and attendance.
TARDIES: On the fourth tardy a student will receive a no more than a 1.
STUDENT BEHAVIOR: Behavior in the classroom should appropriate and consistent for learning to take place for all students in the class. Again, school regulations
as outlined in the "Ti" book will be followed.
ATTENDANCE: Students are expected to attend class everyday. Your attendance will not only affect your academic grade as outlined above, but your citizenship
grade also will be affected. Students will receive a 1 on the first truancy, and a 0 on the second truancy. No make-up work will be available for work
missed while truant. The school guidelines for citizenship as outlined in the Ti-Book will be followed.
